Why DJ Headphones Are Different

DJ headphones are not hi-fi headphones. They need to perform in high-SPL environments, survive physical abuse, and be immediately audible when one ear cup is flipped off the ear.

Isolation

The most important specification for a DJ headphone is passive isolation. You need to hear your cue mix at a volume that does not damage your hearing while the main speakers are pumping 105dB.

Sound Signature

DJs benefit from a slightly forward midrange — this is where the BPM information lives. The Sennheiser HD 25 is the reference for this sound signature.

On-Ear vs Over-Ear

On-ear headphones (like the HD 25) can be cupped off one ear more easily. Over-ear headphones offer better isolation and often better bass response.

Durability
